This Is Getting Out Of Hand…
Talk about a shock and awe campaign, Saskatoon!
by Chris Kirkland
Right then, Saskatoon — we get it: you seriously, seriously love this contest! And, as utterly exhausted as we are after
counting an unbelievable mountain of your ballots, we couldn’t be happier. Trust me, we’ll be going to sleep (soon —
please, please let it be soon…) with very large smiles on our faces!
To put it in perspective, last year we set a record for the number of votes in what was then the six-year history of
our Best Of Saskatoon reader’s poll. Being the optimistic types we are, we hoped that might happen again this year —
so we got organized a bit more quickly, added more bodies to our counting staff and patted ourselves on the back
ever-so-smugly for our preparation and organizational skills.
Until, that was, we received over 60 per cent more ballots this year than in 2008!
From then until this issue hit the printer, it was a head-long, full-on dash to count ballots,
tabulate and re-check the results, and generate the magazine you currently have in your hands. A crazy
amount of work, sure — but even more, a wonderful testament to just how much so many of you like to
express an opinion on the best of everything this city has to offer.
Throughout the year, we have a ton of fun with this mag — we pride ourselves on offering seriously
credible and cool coverage of music, theatre, movies, and all other forms of entertainment that you can
find in Saskatoon, for example. We also love to talk food, fashion and drink — because we’re pretty sure
you love it as much as we do.
But there’s no denying that, in addition to the fun stuff, we feel it’s our duty to offer an
alternative — and often critical — view on local, provincial and national news stories. Sometimes,
the weight of that duty can drag a person down slightly, causing one to forget just how much good
there actually is in the world — despite all the problems.
That’s why, unbelievable workload notwithstanding, we absolutely love our annual Best Of Saskatoon poll —
and, I think, it’s why so many of you love it too. There are a ton of great people, places, establishments
and things in Saskatoon—and at least once a year, it’s a treat to throw the spotlight on them and hand out
a few well-deserved kudos.
Thanks for helping us do so, Saskatoon!

CITY PEOPLE
BEST BARTENDER
AMIGOS CANTANA
It’s a two-peat for marvelous mixmaster Michael Eva of Amigos, who takes the title of Best Bartender
for the second year in a row — after an incredibly close race with fellow Amigos bar master Jayce
Ollenberger, who lands in second spot. Also proving themselves to be perfect pourers are Curtis Ulmer
of Bud’s in third and Hollis Martin of Cluricaune, right behind in fourth.
BEST SERVER
Amigos Cantina
Need any more proof that Amigos Cantina is a wicked place for a drink? Well, how about the fact that
Amigos’ Dara Hardy has taken top spot in this year’s Best Server category? Following closely behind
Dara in the super service category are Anna Kunz of Earl’s, Ashley Hamilton of the Ivy and Dom Sparrow at Earl’s.
BEST RESTAURANT/BAR STAFF OVERALL
AMIGOS CANTINA
And… it’s a sweep for Amigos in the customer satisfaction category! Saskatoon’s most loved cantina
also takes first in the Best Staff overall category — just as they did last year. Readers also felt
wonderfully well taken care of at the Yard and Flagon, the Keg and O’Shea’s.
BEST PROFESSOR/INSTRUCTOR
Tim Quigley
Tim Quigley lays down the law in his classes — and he does it better than anyone else, say our readers!
Quigley, a U of S law professor, has taken the title of Best Professor Instructor this year, followed
closely by erudite English prof Liv Marken in second and Commerce guru Ayton Archer in third. Of special
note, Planet S writer and awesome Art Department instructor Bart Gazzola nabs fourth spot!
BEST CITY COUNCILLOR
CHARLIE CLARK
It’s “Charles in Charge” for another year — as Ward 6 rep Charlie Clark takes top spot in this category
for the second year in a row. Readers also find Tiffany Paulsen terrific as she repeats her second-place
showing of 2008, while Bev Dubois, Darren Hill and Gord Wyatt also all grabbed a significant number of
votes — making third place pretty much a toss-up!
BEST SASKATOON MLA
PAT ATKINSON
Patty sits pretty again! For an astonishing seventh year in a row — every year this contest has existed,
in other words — the NDP’s Pat Atkinson has taken top spot in the Best MLA category. However, it should
be noted that Atkinson certainly didn’t win in a walk this year, as she prevailed over the Sask. Party’s
Ken Cheveldayoff by only a few votes in an extremely tight race (yes — we did in fact do a recount!).
Also hitting the happy list were the Sask. Party’s Don Morgan in third, just ahead of the NDP’s Cam Broten.
BEST SASKATOON MP
None
With a resounding, collective “Hmph!”, voters have pushed “None” back into the top spot of the Best MP
category (up from third place last year) — ouch! Of those who did get votes, Brad Trost led the way by
pulling into second spot, while Lynne Yelich drops to third from last year’s first place.
BEST CITIZEN ACTIVIST
Ellen Quigley
Wanna know how much Planet S reader’s appreciated last year’s We Are Many Festival? Well, the title of
this year’s Citizen Activist category was taken by one of WAM’s principle organizers, Ellen Quigley, just
ahead of perennial favourites Peter Garden in second and Don Kossick in third — with “the WAM team” as a
whole taking fourth!
BEST LAWYER
Alan McGuire
There’s a changing of the guard in the courthouse, as Alan McGuire takes the crown as this year’s top legal
eagle — ending Bill Roe’s incredible four-year run at the top. Roe and Co. is still a fine place to go for
legal advice according to our readers, as Bill takes second spot this year, followed by Kearney Healy in third
and Don Worme in fourth.
BEST SASKATOON BLADE
Braden Holtby
The puck stops here when it comes to Saskatoon’s favourite Blade of 2009 — as terrific netminder Braden Holtby,
who back-stopped the Blades to one of their best seasons in recent memory, takes top spot. Also scoring with
Planet S readers were team captain Derek Hulak in second spot, followed by Ryan Funk and Jyri Niemi.
BEST HUSKIE
Steven DaSilva
Hockey Dog extraordinaire Steven DaSilva was a multiple award winner in the world of CIS hokcey this year—
including being named MVP of the Canada West conference. He’s also an MVP in the hearts of our voters, as
they named him Best Huskie of 2009. Soccer star Jamie LeMay kicked her way into second spot, while fantastic
footballer Laurence Nixon took third.

MEDIA
BEST SASKATOON TV STATION
CTV
Talk about dominating the ratings! CTV has once again been voted Best Local TV Station — but that’s not really
a newsflash, as they’ve won this category each and every one of the seven years Best Of Saskatoon has been in
existence! Global rocks the ratings in second spot, while CBC stars in third.
BEST TV NEWS COVERAGE
CTV
This is not a recording — well, it kinda is (for further results, see the following five categories as well)—
because for another year, CTV’s crack team of news gatherers take top spot in this category. Indeed, this entire
category stays the same as last year, with the intrepid reporters at CBC nabbing second place, while the newshounds
at Global sniff out third.
BEST TV SPORTS COVERAGE
CTV
They score — again! In terms of sports dynasties, few can top the champions at CTV, who rule this category for
another year. Global stickhandles their way into second for another year, while CBC hits the podium in third.
BEST TV ANCHOR
ROB MacDONALD, CTV
Speaking of dynasties, the CTV’s Rob MacDonald is pretty much the one-man embodiment of the term in this
category, as he takes top spot yet again—adding another seven-time winner to CTV’s Best Of trophy wall.
MacDonald’s compatriot, Trish Cheveldayoff, jumps from third to second this year, while the CBC’s Costa
Maragos denies CTV a sweep of the top (which they did last year), by taking third.
BEST TV REPORTER
Mark Rogstad, CTV
There’s a bit of a switch at the top of this category this year—but it’s still CTV all the way! Mark Rogstad
jumps from third to first, winning the category for 2009, followed by an extremely close race between fellow
CTV newshounds Jennifer Jellicoe (last year’s champ), Tara Yolan and Norma Reid for second, third and fourth,
respectively.
BEST WEATHER FORECASTER
JEFF ROGSTAD, CTV
Jeff Rogstad pulls off part two of the CTV brother act, matching Mark’s win as best reporter by taking a landslide
win in the Best Weather Forecaster category — meaning the sun shines on Jeff for the fourth year in a row! Global’s
Warren Dean is also a great guy to turn to when you’re wondering about weather, according to our voters, picking up a
nice chunk of votes to finish in second spot, while Environment Canada’s Bob Cormier nabs third again this year.
BEST SPORTSCASTER
KEVIN WAUGH, CTV
And… the sweep is complete! Kevin Waugh hits a home run by winning Best Local Sportscaster— and a grand slam at that,
as this is his fourth win in a row — and in the process gives CTV a clean sweep of the television categories. Voters
also love to get their game notes from Esther Madziya, as she powers into second spot again this year, while TSN’s
Saskatchewan reporter Wray Morrison slides into third.
BEST RADIO STATION
CFCR
It’s seventh heaven for CFCR, as they take top spot in the Best Radio Station category — just as they have every
year we’ve run this contest. It was, however, a noticeably closer race this year, as both Rock 102 and CBC also grabbed
a large number of votes. In the end, 102 moves up from third spot in 2008 to take second, while CBC leaps from last year’s
fourth place onto the podium by taking third.
BEST RADIO PERSONALITY
KURT AND JENN, CFCR
CFCR’s dynamic duo of the morning have pulled a three-peat! Just like ’07 and ’08, Kurt Soucy and Jenn Pereira are the
hosts with the most, chatting their way to top spot in this category. C95 morning institution Ramblin’ Dave rumbles into
second spot for another year, while Rock 102’s Gregger takes third — just ahead of Saskatoon’s ultimate talking head, Sir
John Gormley!
BEST PLANET S WRITER
Craig Silliphant
He’s one of our masterful mainstays of music coverage, he’s filled in wonderfully on the dining beat, and he can take
just about any topic you throw at him and turn out an awesomely interesting article — he’s Craig Silliphant, and you’ve
voted him as the Best Planet S writer this year! The “take no compromises” approach of political columnist John Conway
scored a lot of fans as well, putting him in second place, while Bart Gazzola and Stephen LaRose tied for third — just
ahead of varying takes on “You’re all great — I can’t decide!” You’re just so darn sweet, Saskatoon!
BEST THING ABOUT PLANET S MAGAZINE
Best Of!
Trust me folks — we’re blushing like crazy with all the wonderful compliments you’ve given us in this category!
And topmost of those in terms of numbers is…this very contest! And why not? Offering up opinions on the best of
everything that Saskatoon has to offer is super-fun! Other super-nice things that many of you agreed on included
“excellent journalism,” “entertainment coverage and listings,” “dining reviews,” “local focus and covering controversial
issues,” “combination of news, wry humour and entertainment,” “not controlled by the man” (my personal favourite!),
and, of course, “FREE!” Aren’t you just the biggest bunch of sweethearts, Saskatoon!

ARTS
BEST LOCAL BAND
Deep Dark Woods
Roots rock really rocks Saskatoon’s world this year, as the old-school stylings of Deep Dark Woods take a well-deserved
win in the Best Local Band category! These guys are grabbing buzz all across Canada — as are our second-place finishers,
musical collective par excellence Carbon Dating Service, who wind up just ahead of last year’s champs, The Sheepdogs,
and Maybe Smith.
BEST VOCALIST
Andrea Menard
Actress, playwright, musician — she’s Saskatoon’s Renaissance woman, and Andrea Menard is also Saskatoon’s Best Vocalist
of 2009! Following right behind is blueswoman extraordinaire Megan Lane, who snipes some family bragging rights by finishing
just ahead of her sis (and last year’s champ) Jen.
BEST AUTHOR
GUY VANDERHAEGHE
There’s no plot twist here, as Guy Vanderhaeghe picks up yet another Best Author title! There is, however, a flip flop in
terms of the second and third spots, as Yann Martel just edges out Anthony Bidulka — who just edged out Martel for second
spot last year!
BEST ACTOR
Kent Allen
Here’s a shocking onstage development — a new Best Actor! After many years of ruling this category, Brad Grass hands
off the crown to Kent Allen, while Robert Benz pulls one soliloquy ahead of Andrea Menard for second spot. Alphonse
Gaudet’s thespian brilliance pulls in a significant number of votes again this year, as did Grass!
BEST LIVE THEATRE COMPANY
PERSEPHONE THEATRE
The beautiful boards along the riverbank have once again taken top spot in this category, as Persephone’s perfect
programming wins for a seventh straight year! Lovers of the stage in Saskatoon also love the little guys, however,
as the Live Five collective jumps from third last year into second spot, just edging out Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan,
while the Off-Broadway Dinner Theatre and the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company also prove a hit with voters.
BEST THEATRE PRODUCTION
Frankenstein
The “spark of life” really caught fire with theatre-loving voters this year, as Mary Shelly’s brilliant tale of terror,
despair and loss staged a wonderfully imaginative fashion at Persephone, takes the title in this category. The rollicking
rock ‘n’ roll of Buddy Holly ripped into second spot, followed by an all-time classic, Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol
(both also at Persephone), while The Pillowman (Live Five) and A Rez Christmas (SNTC) captivated audiences as well.
BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE
AMIGOS CANTINA
“Rock ‘n’ roll is a hard life,” said The Forgotten Rebels — but it sure ain’t hard to watch it at Amigos! For the fourth
straight year, this off-Broadway Mecca of music takes the Best Live Music venue title, pulling ahead of both fellow Broadway
icons Lydia’s and Bud’s and larger venues like TCU Place and Credit Union Centre.
BEST MOVIE THEATRE
GALAXY THEATRE
It’s a two-peat for the big boy of the big screen, as the Galaxy Theatre tops this category for the second year in a row —
but the home of Hollywood only narrowly beat out art house extraordinaire Broadway Theatre, while the wonderfully renovated
Roxy Theatre also grabbed an impressive number of nods.
BEST PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION
“Unfurled”
This is a first-time category for Best Of, so we’re happy to see it caught the imagination of a large number of voters!
Inaugural bragging rights go to “Unfurled” by Douglas Bentham, which is located at the bottom of the University Bridge,
while the “Founders” statue at the base of the Traffic Bridge also grabbed a large number of votes, along with the statues
of both Gordie Howe and Gabriel Dumont.
BEST PUBLIC ART GALLERY
MENDEL ART GALLERY
It may (may…) be on the move at some point in the near future — but for now, voters love it right where it is! The
Mendel tops this category — as they’ve topped the Art Gallery category each and every year of Best Of — pulling ahead
of AKA, who caught a lot of eyes while finishing in second spot, the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery, and the
Snelgrove Gallery at the U of S.
BEST PRIVATE ART GALLERY
The Rouge Gallery
This is the first year we’ve split the Art Gallery category into Public and Private, and our first Private winner
is…The Rouge Gallery! Located on 3rd Avenue South in the downtown, the Rouge’s impressive mix of pieces and oft-changing
exhibitions proved a big hit with voters — as did relative newcomers The Stall Gallery, and local institution the Darrel Bell Gallery.

CITY LIVING
BEST THING TO DO IN SASKATOON
Walk/Run/Bike/Hangout on the riverbank/Meewasin Trail
When you’ve got a natural feature as beautiful and awesome as the river that runs right through our fair city, it’s
understandable that including that feature in as many activities as possible is extremely popular — and as such,
the riverbank/Meewasin Trail takes top spot in this category again! Proof that Saskatoon’s cultural community is
coming on strong can be seen in the fact that Concerts/Shows steams into second spot, while the ever-popular Dining Out holds
down third this year — ahead of roughly a zillion other great options!
BEST NEIGHBOURHOOD TO LIVE IN
NUTANA
It’s still hip and happenin’ after all these years—and the funky Nutana/Broadway area is still the coolest place to
live in Saskatoon, say voters! Sassy City Park takes second again this year, with almost every other part of the city
well-represented as well — clearly, people in this town take pride in their neighbourhoods!
BEST PLACE TO TAKE AN OUT-OF-TOWNER
Riverbank/Meewasin
Once again, the crown jewel of Saskatoon — the river — takes top spot when local residents are looking to show off to
their visitors! A relatively new part of that river system, the River Landing development, nabs second spot this year,
just ahead of the Mendel Art Gallery, and everything that Broadway Avenue has to offer!
BEST CITY FESTIVAL
Saskatchewan Jazz Festival
This is always one of our most hotly contested categories, and it’s certainly no different this year! After a back and
forth tug of war right through the counting period, the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival comes out on top — taking the title
for the second year in a row! The Fringe Festival was also hugely popular, finishing right behind in second, while
festive Saskatonians also showed much love for Taste of Saskatchewan and the first-ever We Are Many festival!
BEST GOLF COURSE
THE WILLOWS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
There’s absolutely nothing sub-par about the Willows (except your score, if you’re lucky!), as they’ve dominated this
category for years now, taking it again for 2009. Moon Lake hits it straight down the fairway by grabbing second spot
again, while Holiday Park jumps back into the top three with a birdie the 18th hole to edge out Dakota Dunes by a stroke
or two.
BEST FITNESS FACILITY
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPLEX
The PAC is back — for the third year in a row! The University of Saskatchewan’s big and shiny fitness centre takes
top spot in this category for another year, while Mawson Fitness does the heavy lifting to nab a second consecutive
second-place finish, just ahead of World Gym and the YMCA.
BEST BEAUTY SPA
SPA AHAVA
After a long, nasty winter, we all need a bit of pampering — and for yet another year, voters say the best spot to
soak up some special attention is Spa Ahava on Broadway! The soul soothers at Paramount and Sunsera are also highly
recommended, as are the fine folks at Angles and Chel, who tied for fourth.
BEST EMPLOYER
UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN
The hallowed halls of academe are once again a dream for Saskatoon’s workers, as they take top spot in the employee
satisfaction category for a second straight year. SaskTel dials up an impressive second place spot this year, while
Cameco, the City of Saskatoon and Robertson Stromberg Peterson also rank right up there in terms of great places to
make a day’s pay.
BEST EXCUSE FOR BEING LATE FOR WORK
Car Trouble
It may seem that perennial winner “bad freakin’ weather!” has been dethroned this year — but in Saskatchewan, saying
“my car won’t start” generally means “it’s minus 40 and I sorta forgot to plug it in…” Traffic and waiting for a
train were also popular responses, while some of the more imaginative answers included “I lost my car in a pothole”
and — my personal favourite — “There was a pigeon fight in the parking lot over a piece of toast, and I had to settle
it.” How could a boss argue with that, really?
BEST BRIDGE
Traffic/Victoria
This is the first time we’ve had this category in Best Of (although, being the “City Of Bridges,” we perhaps should’ve
thought of it a bit earlier…), and the old-school allure of the quaint, cool — and narrow — Traffic/Victoria Bridge takes
the crown (although it should be said, many people added variations of “without the silly lights” while voting for it…)!
Connecting beautiful Broadway with historic downtown, the Broadway Bridge comes in a close second, while the University
and Train Bridges also grab excellent amounts of votes.

CITY LOVING
BEST DATE ACTIVITY
DINNER AND...
Nothing gets the love flowing like a full tummy, say voters — as Dinner and… a movie, a walk and pretty much anything
else tops the list as the best way to make a date go great for yet another year. Live music and theatre also scored highly
when voters are lookin’ to pitch some woo. The most original answer this year, you ask? Why, it’s “building a quinzhee!”
(Look it up — I had to!)
BEST RESTAURANT FOR A DATE
The Keg
A sizzlin’ steak, a glass of wine… and let the love begin! Whether you like your love medium rare or well done, our
voters say the Keg is the best restaurant to kick it off. Calories gets a French kiss from voters while taking second,
while the Ivy, Sushiro and Truffles also rank highly on the love-o-meter.
BEST PICK UP LINE
“Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?”
It’s simple, inoffensive, and hard to deny (unless of course, the answer is “gawd, I hope not!”). Even more simple is
“Hi!”, the one-syllable wonder that pops into second spot this year. Some of the more original (and in a few cases,
utterly mystifying) answers this year included “Can I buy you a drink, or do you just want the money?”, “Wanna go to a
highly suspect buffet?”, “Wanna go halfsies on a barstool?”, and — tops in my opinion — “Do camels count as domesticated?”
You’re an interesting group, Saskatoon!
BEST PICK UP SPOT
The Bar
If you’re on a date, head to a cool restaurant — but if you’re lookin’ for a date, voters say head to a hot bar!
In fact, one bar in particular seems to draw the desirable, as Beily’s takes an astonishing number of votes to finish
second all on its own in this category! For the less liquor-inclined amongst us, the grocery store, the university
and the riverbank are all popular places for “prospecting.”
BEST BREAK UP LINE
“It’s not you, it’s me”
Ahh, the end of love — such a sad time. And apparently, voters this year are looking to spare their dumpees the heartbreak of
a bad break-up, by taking the responsibility on themselves (it couldn’t be that they’re just trying to get away as fast as
possible and without answering any questions, could it?). Some of the less-friendly (and therefore more hilarious) answers
included “Call me when you’re Brad Pitt”, “I need to focus on my street gang responsibilities”, and, perhaps most unique,
“I need to go build houses with my dead father.” Hard to find a good comeback to that one…
BEST BREAK UP SPOT
The Phone
Wow — actually speaking to someone when you’re dumping them (although not face to face…) has jumped into top spot, just
beating out last year’s cold-but-effective winner, “by text message.” On the other hand, voters also suggested that
“anywhere public” is a fine (and safety-conscious) place — as is “Anywhere away from tall buildings or bridges!”

LOCAL SHOPPING
BEST SHOPPING CENTRE
THE MIDTOWN PLAZA
It’s the Mall With It All for yet another year, say voters, as the Midtown Plaza once again hits the top of the mall
crawl category. Lawson Heights Mall jumps from third last year to second spot in 2009, while The Centre at Circle and
Eighth is also a fine place to troll for bargains.
BEST CLOTHING (WOMEN)
TONIC
Got the bad clothing blues, ladies? Check out Tonic to find the perfect cure! Once again, Tonic tops the list in terms
of terrific togs for women, while Winner’s and Best Of Saskatoon favourites Ultimo Euromoda take second and third
respectively, just ahead of a wealth of wonderful stores!
BEST CLOTHING (MEN)
ULTIMO EUROMODA
Make the score four — as in four straight victories in this category — for local high-end clothing superstars Ultimo
Euromoda! Masterful male fashions can also be found at Anthony’s, which finished in second, and Caswell’s Co., who jump
into the top three this year.
BEST CLOTHING (YOUNG ADULT)
The Gap
When it comes to cool clothes for happenin’ young adults, The Gap is the place to be this year, according to our voters,
as they vault into top spot for 2009 — just ahead of Ultimo Euromoda, who are right at the top in almost all our clothing
categories. From there, Undergrind, Garage and Tonic are right behind, all grabbing a shwack of votes in this hotly-contested
category as well.
BEST CLOTHING (KIDS)
CHILDREN’S PLACE
It’s a two-fer in terms of tot’s togs for Children’s Place, as last year’s champ repeats as the best spot to outfit your
tot. Voters also say you can’t go wrong with The Gap/Baby Gap, while Exclusive Style’s and Gaby’s will also leave your kids
lookin’ cool!
BEST FURNITURE STORE
Furniture World
There’s a new king of the couch, as Furniture World jumps into tops spot for 2009 in this category. Never fear, however —
last year’s champ, Leon’s remains a great spot to choose a chair, says voters, while the Brick will also outfit your living
room in style, as they squeak into third spot just ahead of the Urban Barn.
BEST SHOE STORE
DURAND’S
Treat your tootsies to super shoes at Durand’s, say voters — who’ve put them in first place for a third consecutive year!
Feet also feel fine at Fixation, who jump into second, while Broadway Shoe Repair and Aldo also stir the “soles” of our
readers, finishing in second and third respectively.
BEST OPTICAL STORE
OPTIKA
What’s the number on that eye chart? It’s a three — as in a third straight win for the gurus of glasses at Optika. Point
Optical is also a vision of perfection for voters, as they maintain last year’s second place finish, while Atrium Optical
has their sights set firmly on third spot this year, just ahead of Eyes.
BEST BOOKSTORE
McNALLY ROBINSON
They’re the barons of the book in Saskatoon, as McNally Robinson once again tops all contenders for Best Bookstore,
thanks to a vast selection, a heavy schedule of author appearances and other events — and a cool restaurant! Proudly
local Turning The Tide is also fast becoming an institution in this category as well, nabbing second spot for 2009,
while relative newcomers Indigo enjoy their first time on the list with a third place finish, just ahead of Coles.
BEST MAGAZINE STORE
McNally Robinson
Now that the venerable Reader’s Nook is no more (and even that didn’t stop them from posthumously grabbing a
significant number of votes), voters turned the page and placed McNally on top of the magazine category. And,
just as with Best Bookstore, they’re followed by Turning The Tide, Indigo and Coles.
BEST SECONDHAND BOOKSTORE
WHITE CAT BOOKS
All cats have nine lives — but this Cat also has three straight Best Of titles to meow about, as the large and varied selection
at White Cat in the downtown proves tops with voters for another year. Indeed, this entire category is on the same page as last year,
with Westgate Books once again taking second and Tramps maintaining their hold on third — although 8th Street Comics and Books almost
provided a new twist to the tale.
BEST CD/RECORD STORE
VINYL DINER
With the rise of mp3s, iPods and digital file-sharing, it’s fair to wonder whether this category will still exist in 10 years —
but until then, Broadway institution the Vinyl Diner will probably be right at the top of this category, as they win it for another
year. HMV tunes into second spot again this year, while the platters are also perfect at the Vinyl Diner, who pull in just ahead of
CD Plus for 2009.
BEST UNIQUE GIFTS
10,000 VILLAGES
They’re first in the Fair Trade category, and they’re also first in the hearts of voters looking for gifts that are original and
unique, as 10,000 Villages nab this category for another year. Voters looking for something better than mainstream and mass-produced
when it comes to gift-giving also loved Twisted Goods and Esteem — just like last year — with Alternations also grabbing a good share of kudos.
BEST SECONDHAND FIND
VALUE VILLAGE
They’ve been around in North America for well over 50 years — and Value Village remains the top spot to snag some excellent used-but-not-
abused clothes, say our voters. Lofty Ladies is also a great place for a steal of a deal, as they pop into second spot this year, while the
Mennonite Clothes Closet maintains their firm grip on the top three.
BEST LOCALLY-OWNED STORE (NON CHAIN/FRANCHISE)
TURNING THE TIDE
This progressive, fair-trade minded, ethically-motivated store has become seriously entrenched as a (barely) off-Broadway institution —
and voters have once again rewarded that value set by naming Turning The Tide the Best Locally Owned store for the second year in a row.
Downtown fashionistas Tonic prove that success in the clothing biz can be homegrown by taking second, while the Vinyl Diner record shop
pulls into third, just ahead of Early’s Farm and Garden.
BEST SKATEBOARD SHOP
Nine Times
Nine Times is a gold mine when it comes to boards, accessories and clothing from the world of skate, say our voters, who’ve vaulted them
into top spot in this category for 2009 (up from last year’s third). The shredders at Undergrind, last year’s champs, maintain the pace
by holding down second spot, while Dunas and Doug’s Spoke and Sport each flipped enough votes to make third place pretty much a toss-up.
BEST BIKE SHOP
BIKE DOCTOR
The Doctor is in — again! For an impressive sixth year in a row, the Bike Doctor wheels into top spot in this category, while Doug’s
Spoke and Sport grab the pedal into second spot again, followed closely by City Park Cycle.
BEST SPORTING GOODS STORE
Al Anderson’s
Al’s your pal when it comes to all manner of sports equipment, clothing and accessories, as Al Anderson’s Source For Sports vaults
into gold medal position this year. Last year’s title holder, Sport Check, maintains second spot on the podium this year, while
Olympian Sports takes the bronze — just ahead of Doug’s.
BEST MOVIE RENTAL STORE
ROGERS
Much like Gus Van Sant’s frame-by-frame remake of Psycho, this category replicates last year’s results from start to finish in
terms of the top contenders. Roger’s Video takes top spot in the battle for rental film supremacy, while Blockbuster presses play
on second place once again — and again, they’re a freeze frame or two ahead of Turning The Tide, who finish third.
BEST COMPUTER STORE
OTV
Doing it right in terms of bits and bytes is OTV, top dogs in this category for a second straight year. Voters say viruses don’t
stand a chance at Neural Net, either, as they repeat their solid second place from last year, while Future Shop and the Campus
Computer Store finish just a mouse click or so apart, in third and fourth respectively.
BEST AUDIO EQUIPMENT
AUDIO WAREHOUSE
Call it Quadraphonic —‘cause Audio Warehouse has rumbled, woofed and tweeted their way to top spot in the Best Audio Equipment
contest for the fourth straight year! Krazy Kiley’s turns up the tunes by jumping from third spot into second this year, while
Vison’s continues to rock the top three as well.
BEST CAR DEALERSHIP (NEW)
ENS LEXUS/TOYOTA
It’s a familiar road to the top for Ens, as they hit top gear in the New Car Dealership category for another year! Meidl Honda
hits overdrive while jumping into second from 2008’s third spot, while Saturn of Saskatoon kicks in the turbo boost to leap into
their first finish in the top three — just edging out Jubilee Ford and Wheaton’s GM.
BEST CAR DEALERSHIP (USED)
CAA
New or used, voters say you definitely won’t be abused at Ens, as they follow up their win in the New Car category by also grabbing
top spot as the best place to pick up a perfectly pleasant pre-owned vehicle! Jubilee Ford and SMP are also spots that simply won’t
steer you wrong in terms of finding an excellent new-to-you ride, according to voters — and the same holds true for Custom Imports.
BEST ACCESSORIES
Frakas
Searching for the perfect bangle or bracelet, wrist watch or ring — or indeed, anything else — to complete your awesome outfit?
Head to Frakas — first in the hearts of our voters, in a category that’s new to Best Of this year! Voters also happily head down to
Hats ‘N’ That and Et Ceteras, who finish in second and third respectively, to find the last piece of their fashion puzzles.
BEST AREA OF TOWN TO SHOP
Broadway Avenue
Here’s another new category for 2009 — and based on the tons of votes it brought in, it looks like we should’ve had it included much
sooner than this! Funky and fantastic Broadway Avenue takes the inaugural title, while Saskatoon’s ever-growing Downtown district also
receives a massive number of votes, finishing in second spot ahead of University-area big-box development Preston Crossing.
BEST PET SUPPLY STORE
Early’s Farm and Garden
People love their pets — which is why many were perplexed that we didn’t have this category in the past. Well, rejoice, animal
lovers! The category is here, and Early’s is the champ, finishing just ahead of Critter’s. Pet Land and Pet Cetera are also awesome
options when it comes to our four-legged friends, say voters.
BEST GARDENING STORE
Early’s Farm and Garden
What’s that? You need both pet supplies and some items to get ready for gardening season? Don’t worry — you won’t have to make an extra
trip, as Early’s Farm and Garden have taken top spot in this category as well. The green thumbs amongst us also appreciate Dutch grower’s
and Wilson’s Greenhouse, giving both of them a “plantiful” number of votes as well!
BEST ECO-FRIENDLY STORE
Steep Hill Co-op
Another new category that clearly should’ve been a no-brainer years ago (oops…), our first-ever Best Eco-Friendly Store win goes to…
the super folks at the Steep Hill Co-op on Broadway! Voters also rewarded Turning The Tide and Dad’s Nutrition, who finish in second and
third respectively, for lovin’ good ol’ Mother Earth!
BEST MUSICAL EQUIPMENT STORE
Long and McQuade
Long (ha!) an institution is Saskatoon’s downtown, Long and McQuade relocated a few years ago to a much bigger location in the city’s
north end — and it appears to have paid off, as they’ve drummed up enough support from music-making voters to take this category.
Underdog Music Company flicks the amps to 11 and takes second spot, just ahead of the axemasters at Mother’s Music.
BEST HOME RENOVATION STORE
Home Depot
The Depot is dynamite when it comes to the type of do-it-yourself renos that are all the rage these days, say our voters! Rona rocks
‘n’ renovates their way into second spot, while the Co-op snips, saws and seals down third place, a little ways ahead of Habitat For
Humanity’s Re-Store.
BEST HOME DECOR STORE
Sew and Home
Once those renos are finished, it’s time to decorate your shiny new space — and there’s no better place to start than Sew and Home,
say our voters, as they co-ordinate a first place finish in this category. Home Outfitter’s fill also get your digs ship-shape in no
time, while voters clearly also think Urban Barn is da bomb, placing them in the top three.
BEST ADULT/LOVE SHOP
Positive Passions
What happens behind your bedroom door is nobody’s business but yours — but if you’re looking to spice up that business just a bit,
Positive Passions is the place to begin! For Lovers Only also gets voter’s pulses pounding, while adventurous types are giving Dirk’s
Love Shop — which is currently in the midst of selling off inventory and closing their doors after 30 years — a friendly send-off,
placing them in third.

SERVICES
BEST HAIR SALON
Salon Guru
There’s a flip flop at the top of this always hotly-contested category this year, as Salon guru moves up from second spot in
2008 to take the title. Last year’s winner, Ethos, remains a wonderful spot to get a super snip, while Angles teases their way
into third — just ahead of a whole whack of other great spots!
Best Tattoo Shop
Eye Of The Needle
Voters have inked in Eye Of The Needle as Saskatoon’s Best Tattoo Shop for the second year in a row! And, just like last year,
the needle-masters at Rites of Passage are “rite” behind in second, while Tantrix leaps into third — just ahead of Ink Addiction.
BEST FLORIST
BILL'S HOUSE OF FLOWERS
Bill knows best when it comes to flowers, says Best Of voters—as Bill’s once again takes top spot in the Florist category. Blossoms’
also came up smelling like roses in the noses of our readers, as they jump into second spot this year, while Nosegay maintains a firm
hold in the top three as well.
BEST POOL HALL
SNOOKER SHACK
“Cue” the applause — because the Snooker Shack has sent the eight-ball straight into the pocket for yet another year! In what’s
becoming a Best Of tradition, the folks at the Snooker Shack have once again been voted the Cool of Pool — and they’ve got familiar
company at the top, as Pacific Billiards once again nabs second and Modern Billiards chalks up another appearance in the top three.
BEST CATERER
D’REEN’S
The Queen of Catering serves up a win in this category for another year, as voters once again proclaim D’reen’s as the perfect place
for party planning when it comes to food. PickNic’s also delivers the gastronomic goods by repeating their second place finish of last year,
while Calorie’s nudges just a bit ahead of Jake’s on 21st to grab third.
BEST TRAVEL AGENT
CAA
Time to get away? Call CAA! That’s right — CAA Travel has dethroned Travel Cuts this year to take top spot in this category, moving up from
last year’s third place finish. But make no mistake — Travel Cuts is still a great option in helping you wing away to warmer climes, as they
finish in second, while Marlin Travel jumps into third this year. Bon voyage!
BEST DRYCLEANERS
Arthur Rose
When you need a clean and press to look your best, our voters say there’s no better place to take your clothes than Arthur Rose!
They also say that Custom Cleaners, last year’s champs, will keep you looking like a million bucks — as will the fine folks at Family
Cleaners, who maintain a firm hold on the top three.
BEST REALTOR (INDIVIDUAL)
Sam Cress
Is the housing market going up, or dropping down? Is it time to buy, sell, or hold still. According to voters, the best person to ask
is Sam Cress, who wins the Best realtor (Individual) category this year. Voters also proclaimed John Kinlock and Norm Fisher, who
finished second and third respectively in an extremely close race, as folks who seriously understand the ins and outs of the housing market.
BEST REALTOR (COMPANY)
RE/MAX
The company with the big balloon are once again the big dogs in this category, as Re/Max takes the title for another year. Voters also
felt right at home buying or selling with Century 21, who grabbed second, and Hallmark, who moved up to third spot this year.
BEST AUTO REPAIR SHOP
AVALON AUTO SERVICE
When it comes to keeping your ride roadworthy, a talented and trustworthy mechanic is worth their weight in gold — and for a second
year in a row, nobody fills the bill like the fine folks at Avalon Auto Service. Shirley’s Auto also keeps their engine humming by
finishing in second for another year, while former champ Lai’s jumps back into the top three by nabbing third.
BEST AUTOBODY SHOP
Mark’s Autobody
You ain’t goin’ far when you’ve got a smashed car — which is why we agreed with our voters from last year, who put Best
Autobody right at the top of our “Category We Missed?” winners, and created the category for this year. And, our first ever
Best Autobody Shop winner is… Mark’s Autobody! Following right — and I do mean right — behind was Landa Autobody, with Kavia,
Parr and Perfection also grabbing a big bunch of votes.
BEST MASSAGE THERAPY
Riverstone Massage Therapy and Esthetics Studio
I’m betting our ballot counters—who you pretty much swamped this year—would love a massage right now! According to our voters,
they should head down to Riverstone Massage Therapy, as they take top spot in this first-year category! Other folks with magic fingers
include Main Street Massage and Inside Out Therapy.
BEST PIERCING SHOP
Schmatta
In another new category inserted at the urging of our readers, Schmatta is the top pick in terms of a perfect place to
get a piercing. Eye Of The Needle adds to their win in the Tattoo category with a solid second place finish here, while
Tantrix also finds a lot of favour with voters.
BEST FAIR-TRADE FRIENDLY STORE
10,000 Villages
As many of our readers pointed out in last year’s Best Of ballot, if we’re going to talk the talk — as in urging employers
both here and around the world to pay fair wages and behave in an ethical fashion, we should walk the walk — as in letting our
voters reward those sell products created in such a way. 10,000 Villages takes top spot in this first-year category, just ahead of
fellow fine folks Turning The Tide and Steep Hill Co-op.

FOOD & DRINK
BEST MARTINI
Flint
Shaking things up in third category is relatively new martini bar Flint, outsipping Saskatoon institution Earl’s in a pimento-stuffed
battle for Best Martini. Flint has become an institution in its own right, capturing a niche in downtown Saskatoon. 2nd Avenue Grill
also once again grabs a nod in this category.
BEST NACHOS
Amigos
The mound of cheese just keeps getting larger for the undefeated nacho dealer. Voters once again threw the tomato to Tex cantina Amigos,
whose mound of snacky goodness is best rivalled by Fox & Hounds pub and Alexander’s restaurant in a tie for second. The Yard & Flagon also
grabs a chip.
BEST WINGS
The Yard and Flagon
They may be cheaper by the dozen, but they’re pure gold at the Yard & Flagon on Broadway. The Yard stays on top of Best Wings once again,
though Wing World edges out second-place mainstay Bridges for number two chicken, say voters. Also getting sauced is 8th St pub Maguires.
BEST SOUP
Calories
Best Soup is a dish best served to Calories — again — but this year the Yard & Flagon came unbelievably close to catching the fine-dining
staple in this category. Calories has long been a long favourite for soups, while the Yard has recently introduced an emphasis on the superb
slurp. Voters spoon it up in second and third with Tastebud’s and Amigos, respectively.
BEST SALAD
Earl’s
Earl’s spears Best Salad for the second year in a row, and the competition remains fresh and filling between the local favourite and McNally
Robinson’s Prairie Ink bistro, according to Saskatonians. Also “gonna marry a carrot” is Amigos, in third place among voters.
BEST SANDWICH
Pita Pit
Hanging on to the title for the second year in a row, Pita Pit takes the pickle for 2009. Not to be wrapped out, Quizno’s subs, Subway’s
subs and Jake’s sandwiches also grab nods, respectively, to take a place in the yearly-changing list of Saskatoon’s sandwich faves.
BEST PIZZA
Vern’s
No one’s is hotter than local favourite Vern’s, who grips the Best Pizza category like a moustache grips melted cheese. Panago serves
it up on a platter, once again taking second, while relative newcomer Aroma — which is not even a pizza place, but which makes an amazing
gourmet pie — takes out mainstay Family Pizza for third.
BEST BURGER
Fuddrucker’s
Fudd’s tops it like no other, and serves it up for yet another year to Saskatoon voters. Munching it up old-school once again is Park Café,
fast becoming an institution in their own right and grilling it up in a close second. Jerry’s is still doing it right in third, while Saskatonians
have Amigos and the Yard duking it out for fourth.
BEST STEAK
Keg
There’s a steak dynasty grilling over at the Keg, who make it to order and make it undefeated in Saskatoon. John’s, too, is untouched in second,
while Carver’s and The Granary beef it up for next nods, respectively.
BEST SEAFOOD
Red Lobster
They don’t have a crustacean in their name for nothin’, as Saskatoon ships off Red Lobster for top spot once again. Our next favourite
place to go for seafood? Home, apparently — after picking up some morsels at Charlie’s seafood market. Joey’s Only, Gibson’s and
Samurai also keep it fresh in the city, say voters, in that order.
Best sushi
Sushiro
Rolling it up to perfection once again is Broadway favourite Sushiro, who have sealed almost every year of Best Sushi. Otowa takes a
bow for perennial second-favourite, followed by the Bessborough’s Samurai and Yohei.
BEST FRENCH
Calories
Calories does French Saskatoon-style better than anyone else, making the Broadway hotspot a local mainstay for those of
us who do it with baguettes. Once again au jus are both Truffles on 21st, and St. Tropez Bistro on 2nd, respectively.
BEST ITALIAN
Taverna
Saskatoon is hoping Taverna’s new owners don’t even change the tablecloths at the downtown pasteria— it’s perfect just
the way it is, taking the golden boot once again in a tight battle with second place Chianti. East Side Mario’s also gets a
big piece of the lasagna.
BEST GREEK
Koutouki
The olive branch is closely guarded over at Koutouki Taverna, who took the polis last year for the first time, and this
year nearly fought to the death with longtime olympians Mykonos. Mano’s, our voters say, edges out Opa into third place.
BEST CHINESE
Genesis
This year there’s a new champ in top Chinese food, as the prize that goes to Genesis on 22nd for the first time.
2009 also sees Tong’s Wok out-wokking the popular Mandarin for the first time, while Szechuan Kitchen keeps frying along
fantastically as well.
BEST JAPANESE
Otowa
The Best Japanese Food category is a yoyo for Saskatonians, who loved the calming ambience at Otowa this year over
the sizzling stylings at Samurai, in a fourth-straight-year flipflop. Third-place incumbent Yohei holds a sash to Sushiro,
in a tie for third.
BEST THAI
Keo’s
Keo’s has become a Saskatoon institution, and they once again take Best Thai in Saskatoon — recruiting voters in droves
after their relocation to Broadway. Another other longtime fave, Red Pepper, takes second curry once again, while Burmese
chefs Golden Pagoda and north-downtowners Royal Thai also get their wai.
BEST VIETNAMESE
Red Pepper
Downtown holds on to the salad rolls this year, where 3rd Ave’s Red Pepper takes favourite Vietnamese for the second-straight
year among voters. In second place, the fish sauce tastes fantastic at Saskatoon Asian Restaurant on 2nd, which overtakes 24th
St’s Saigon Rose.
BEST INDIAN
Taj Mahal
Saskatoon spice-lovers really had it out in 2009, which in the end saw them hold faith in yet-to-reopen Taj Mahal. When the
turmeric settled, Passage To India had second, India Palace third and Asian Taste fourth.
BEST UNIQUE EATING EXPERIENCE
Samurai
Feeling bored — yet hungry? How’s this for an exciting, belly-satisfying to-do list: Samurai and its Japanese chefs, once again,
for first in Best Unique Eating Experience; the intimate, deliberate dining process at The Upstairs in second; Saba’s communal
attitude and hands-on approach next; the ultra fresh and local ingredients at Weczeria in fourth; and if you’re willing to travel
a bit, the made-to-order, made-from-scratch delectables at Hole in the Wall. Now, go thee forth, and eat.
BEST BUSINESS LUNCH
2nd Ave. Grill
Props once again to 2nd Ave Grill, for giving those of us who can’t get away from work for long an excellent place to eat.
The Grill has held this spot tight for ages, but John’s is once again right behind. Honourable mentions to Spadina Freehouse
and Jake’s on 21st.
BEST BREAKFAST
Broadway Café
Holy flapjacks, Batman—was this ever a close race this year! The Broadway café, long a brerakfast institution in this town,
pulled it out in the end—but the margin of victory over second-place Park Café was slimmer than a slice of bacon! Early eaters
also loved Grainfield’s who took third ahead of a host of others!
BEST VEGTARIAN FRIENDLY
Upstairs
The Upstairs is tops once more among Saskatoon diners looking for meatless choice!. Their selection of vegan and vegetarian
alternatives keeps voters coming back up, while Caffe Sola is once again second-favourite for their fresh and veg-friendly menu.
Meanwhile, a remarkable four battle for third tosses carrots to Amigos, Calories, Keo’s, and Park Café.
BEST ALL YOU CAN EAT
Asian Buffet
Maybe we’re still full from last year—but we’re clearly satisfied! 2009 sees no change in the the top three restuarants for
great buffets, with the Longest Table Award going to Asian Buffet. The great selection at Great Buffet of China reels in second,
and third-place nod goes to Bonanza.
BEST BRUNCH
Botanica
Best Brunch in Saskatoon has seen a lot of selection over the years, but bottom o’ the mornin’ to Botanica for the second
straight nab. The lost meal also finds a fine home at The Willows, with the Bessborough’s Garden Court Café and Grainfield’s
settling on a tie for third-favourite. Honourable mention to Park Café.
BEST LUNCH UNDER $10
Jake’s on 21st
It’s a three-peat, as they say, for downtown mainstay Jake’s on 21st in the appetizing-and-affordable category. Park Café
nabs a repeat among our voters for second spot, just edging out perennial faves Red Pepper.
BEST FAMILY RESTAURANT
Fuddrucker’s
It’s Fudd’s as always in Saskatoon, as the burger masters remain undefeated among great places that both adults
and kids can agree on. Boston Pizza, Amigos and Jerry’s Food Emporium are also places where everyone can have fun.
BEST NEW RESTAURANT
Original Joes
It’s a boy! Favourite newborn goes to Original Joe’s, say voters, for great food and atmosphere. And if you haven’t
tried them already, you also must get to Avocado for Mexican food, and Bliss and Ivy for contemporary dining.
BEST RESTAURANT OVERALL
Amigos
Amigos picks up yet another Best Of category — and the biggie for restaurants — as they cinch the Best All-Round title
from Planet S voters. Excellent takes on a combination of quality, atmosphere and service can also be found at Moxie’s,
Calories and Weczeria, say our voters.
BEST PLACE FOR AN AFTER-WORK DRINK
Yard and Flagon
Saskatonians know where to head to put their work behind them — way, way behind them. Yard & Flagon reigns in this category,
while O’Shea’s sneaks up past Earl’s to take second-fave for the first time. Behind Earl’s, folks love to forget work at Winston’s,
Amigos and Barking Fish in almost equal measures!
BEST BREW PUB
Maguire’s
For a place to drink independent and local beers made in-house, look no further than Maguires, who maintain
an undefeated streak in Best Brew Pub. On the other side of the river, head to Fox & Hounds for brews brewed in the bar!.
BEST LOCAL BEER
Great Western
Great Western trotted out the boxing gloves this year, and narrowly — and I mean narrowly — defeated two-year
favourite and Sutherland stalwart Paddock Wood Brewing. Maguires, Fox & Hounds and Whiskey Jack’s, meanwhile,
took it to the street and came back with a three-way tie.
BEST SPORTS BAR
Sports On Tap
After three years of coming in second, Sports On Tap was interviewed and said, “Well, they’re a great club, but
we just gotta keep our eyes on the prize and give it 110 percent.” Which is absolutely what they did edging out
Joe Dog’s in the first/second place battle. To the north, head to the Shark Club to see how the games pan out.
BEST NIGHT CLUB
Beily’s
A night of dancing is best had at Beily’s, who regains the top spot for 2009. Gay-friendly and perennial fave
Diva’s holds on to second spot, while the shooter girls at Jax and the live music shows at Amigos earn their
respective clubs a ranking among Saskatoon’s best!
BEST PATIO
Yard
A good patio is important to Saskatoon—really, we only get so much time to enjoy the outdoors! As the competition
heated up, a downpour of votes has selected the view at the Yard & Flagon as tops once again, followed by the
atmosphere on the rooftop at O’Shea’s and the elegance of Earl’s greened-in enclosure.
BEST COFFEE SHOP
Broadway Roastery
No change in this category, as local stalwarts Broadway Roastery brew up title for the best place to
get a jolt of java, followed by the ethical coffee choices at Caffe Sola, the mass appeal of Tim Horton’s,
and the brewed buzz of Starbucks.
BEST DESSERT
Calories
The name says it all, really—how could you go wrong with dessert at Caloris? You can’t, say our voters—so
after you’ve gone there for some fine French food, stay for the flaky flans. Also be sure to visit Alexander’s
on Cumberland for delectable desserts, or Homestead Ice Cream for surefire sherbets.
BEST ICE CREAM
Homestead
Homestead Ice Cream can be churned, creamed and frozen, but it can’t be beat, as it remains on top in
Best Ice Cream, followed by the house-made gelatos at Jerry’s Food Emporium, the ice milks at Dairy Queen
and the seasonal specials at The Bus Stop.
BEST BAKERY
Christie’s Mayfair
None too flaky is the amazing Christie’s Mayfair Bakery, who take the cake for yet another Reader’s Poll,
and remain undefeated. Broadway mainstay Nutana, newcomer Earthbound on 8th St, and European specialists
Traeger’s are also must-tries.
BEST BUTCHER
Bulk Cheese Warehouse
For the best meats in town, just say “Cheese.” Bulk Cheese Warehouse has cinched the Best Butcher
category yet again, with Prairie Meats right up there as usual coming in as the second-faves. You’ll
also love the loins at Boryski’s Butcher Block and Saskatoon Co-op, say voters.
BEST HEALTH FOOD STORE
Dad’s Nutrition
When Saskatoon voters need foods and supplements low in sugar, high in nutrients or just good for a cleanse,
they head to Dad’s Nutrition Centre. Other favourites are Mom’s Nutrition, Herbs ‘n’ Health Foodport, and Steep
Hill Food Co-op, all in a close battle for second though fourth in the world of health food store excellence.
BEST MEXICAN
E.E. Burritos
For Mexican food, Saskatonians are okay to go all the way to El Salvador to savour the flavours at E.E. Burritos.
Popular nightspot Amigos makes it spicy and super too, followed closely by both newcomer La Bamba and Victoria Ave.
mainstay Las Palapas.
BEST FINE DINING
John’s Prime Rib
Saskatoon’s offerings for the finest of fine dining are numerous indeed, but when the lights were dimmed, John’s Prime
Rib & Steak House came through with the most candles in the hearts of our voters. Whether voters are looking for romance,
intimacy or the utmost in quality and service, they also head to Carver’s at the Sheraton Hotel, Mr. Rizo’s on Idylwyld, or Calories on Broadway.
BEST FISH AND CHIPS
Gibson’s
When it comes to good ol’-fashioned, wonderfully greasy English fish ‘n’ chips, Saskatoon chooses Gibson’s. Blimey, did they
choose Gibson’s! But they also try the tenderness at Jerry’s Food Emporium, Joey’s Only and the Yard and Flagon, who ranked
second, third and fourth, respectively.
BEST SPECIALTY GROCERY STORE
Bulk Cheese Warehouse
One of the newest Best Of categories, Specialty Grocery drew a wide range of specialty interests. Bulk Cheese Warehouse
comes out first for house-made pastas, appetizers and cheeses; Steep Hill Co-op takes second for eco-conscious produce,
treats and cleaning products; Dad’s Nutrition cinches third for body-friendly consumption, and Eastern Market takes fourth for,
eastern foods galore!
BEST HOME BREWING STORE
Poplar Springs
Poplar Springs is totally “poplar” with home-brew lovin’ Toon Towners, as they spring into first place in this new category!
Whether they’re brewing beer or wine, Saskatonians look to Poplar on 8th for their supplies, while Paddock Wood comes in second
for their amazing selection of beer-making needs. Wine Kitz scores big for satisfying local lovers of the vino, while Harvest Brewing
who caters to both brewers, also makes the tops.
Best bubble tea
Fuzion
Fuzion floats right to the topwhen Saskatonians go looking for gelatinous pearls in beverage form. The relative newcomer
on 22nd St steals the show in this new category., while honourable mentions go to the Campus Cove in Lower Place Riel on campus,
and Cesar’s on 3rd Ave, for their fruity and fantastic concoctions.
